Iwama Aikido Dojo Adelaide

About our Dojo

Aiki Shuren Dojo Adelaide is dedicated to the practice and teaching of traditional Iwama Aikido. We are part of Iwama Shinshin Aiki Shuren Kai, headed by Hitohira Saito Sensei.

Iwama Aikido provides a  balanced approach to martial training by integrating empty hand techniques and traditional weapons into one coherent system. Students study how posture, movement, timing and distance work together to respond to attacks safely and effectively.

Our aim is to provide high quality instruction in an environment where students can continue  to learn and improve.

Our Approach to Training

Every technique we study has a martial purpose. Through regular practice, students develop the understanding and skills needed to respond to attacks with timing, positioning, balance and control rather than relying on strength alone. Training includes:

  • Empty hand techniques

  • Ukemi (receiving techniques and safe falling)

  • Bokken

  • Jo

  • Body movement

  • Timing and distance

  • Technical understanding

Rather than chasing quick results, we focus on building capability that continues to develop over time. Every class provides an opportunity to refine what has already been learned.

O'Sensei's Legacy

O'Sensei, the founder of Aikido, lived, farmed, and intensively developed his martial art in Iwama, Japan, synthesizing the empty handed movements and traditional weapon techniques that define Iwama style today.

We practise Iwama Aikido because it preserves a balanced approach to training that integrates empty hand techniques and traditional weapons.

Training with bokken and jo is not separate from Aikido. It develops the same principles of posture, timing, distance, body movement and technical understanding that are applied throughout the art. â€‹This integrated approach helps students develop consistent movement across all aspects of training.

Our Connection to Japan

Our dojo maintains an ongoing connection with Iwama Shinshin Aiki Shuren Kai through regular training in Japan. This relationship helps ensure that our instruction remains aligned with the technical principles and traditions taught at the source.

Michael Costello, head instructor at Aiki Shuren Dojo Adelaide, is committed to preserving traditional Iwama Aikido while making it accessible to students in Australia, "We are passionate about sharing the spirit and Iwama style approach to training Aikido with the local community. Our Dojo is a place to improve technique and fitness, develop mindfulness through training, and foster a positive and connected club atmosphere for all students, in alignment to how we practice Aikido in Iwama, Japan."
